May and June 2008

Bal Mela (Children’s Fair) was organized on May 8th by ‘Nutan Bal Shikshan Sangh’ at Gram Seva campus. The children enjoyed four hours of games, songs, stories etc. with Child Educators Mr. Paragjibhai Patel, Kantibhai Desai, Rashmiben Desai and their team. This was a well spent vacation time for our children and a wonderful learning experience for our Health and Education staff.

On May 10th, Mr. Bhailalbhai of Bhansali Trust spent the day to further the education in Preventive Health for our Community Health staff members. This was a follow up on the previous three day workshop conducted earlier.

Gram Seva’s Project for Reproductive & Child Health (RCH) sponsored by the Government of the State of Gujarat was launched on May 17th. This three year project which took effect in January 2008 will enable us to provide these services more effectively to the underprivileged. We have already received an Award from Government of Gujarat for conducting maximum amount of hospital deliveries in their project area.

Gram Seva Ophthalmic Department organized an Eye Camp on May 18th. A total of 90 patients benefited. Thirty patients were prescribed glasses and 18 patients underwent cataract surgery with intra-ocular lens implants at no cost to them.

Gram Seva Trust Foundation Day was celebrated with the participation of our staff and all our well wishers. The program included Blood Donation Drive, Eye camp, cultural program and dinner. Twenty seven units of blood were collected and 54 patients had their eyes checked; 30 received the necessary glasses and 10 were operated for cataracts. Twenty four sewing machines were distributed to our girls and women who have graduated from our Sewing Classes to facilitate their income gene rating activity.

Starting June 12th, a well equipped ICU has been added to our hospital. This ICU has a Cardiac Monitor and a Central Control System donated by the L & T Company, Mumbai.

Last week of June ended with a week long workshop for the Newly Married Couples. Counseling sessions were conducted by professionals to acquaint them with their social responsibilities and relationships. They were also made aware of the reproductive system and sexually transmitted diseases as most of them are married very early in their adolescent years. The program was a resounding success and during the final celebration, they were all gifted with a group photograph as a souvenir
