     January & February 2008

Jan. 13 & Feb. 10, 2008:
Two eye camps were arranged in Vanzna, a nearby village. A total of 508 eye patients benefited through these camps. Glasses were distributed free of cost to 223 patients. Seventy five patients underwent cataract surgery with Intra-ocular lens implants.

Jan. 26, 2008:
Gram Seva Trust celebrated India’s Republic Day with all the staff members and our children from the Anganwadis (Child Health and Education centers) participated enthusiastically.

February 2008:
We added one more Child Health & Education center in a very remote area of Pipaldhara. These children are totally isolated and are deprived of proper health care, nutrition and especially education.

Jan. & Feb 2008:
Community Health and Education Department with the support of Larsen & Toubro company sponsored school health check up program conducted Health Check including counseling, Blood tests for Hemoglobin, Blood group and survey for Sickle cell disease. Twenty High Schools participated and 7076 8th, 9th and 10th graders benefited from this process. Of these, 186 children were given the needed eye glasses and 53 children were called for cardiac consultation by Dr. Ratna Magotra, pediatric heart surgeon & Dr. Snehal Kulkarni, pediatric cardiologist. Four of these children have Rheumatic Heart Disease and 5 are found to have Congenital Heart Disease. They are being treated and followed up for future Heart Surgery.

Feb. 2008:
We have been selected as one of the 3 Service NGOs in the state of Gujarat by Government of India in an effort to improve the health and nutrition of Mothers and Children with a special focus on safe motherhood, labor & delivery of healthy newborns.

Case Studies:
a) A 26years old woman with history of infertility for 8 years conceived and delivered a healthy newborn girl at our hospital. She lives in a tribal village 100 Kms. away where transportation is negligible. She received pre-natal care at our satellite center in their area and with guidance and help from our staff she was able to come for safe delivery at our hospital.

b) Fifteen days after home delivery of baby boy, the mother was brought to our hospital with profuse vaginal bleeding. She was extremely pale with a very low blood pressure. She was treated and required multiple blood transfusions. She went home to care for her newborn baby after she and the community were counseled regarding advantages of proper pre-natal care and hospital delivery. Though home deliveries by untrained attendants still occur in our area, the incidence has drastically gone down due the diligence of our community health workers and our free pre-natal services. .
