Our Children

"Every child comes with the message that God is not yet discouraged of man!" (Tagore)

The mission for our GST children is that every child in the GST area should be born healthy and grow up to be a healthy, well educated, self-sufficient and self-empowered adult making a positive difference in society.

Since children are our country's most valuable resource and yet so neglected, we are starting with their care. We intend to work on selected areas and eventually expand to cover all of the villages.

Our ultimate goal is to have total physical, mental and emotional health for the 31,027 children in our area, concentrating on the newborn to five-year-olds first. Our children by age 5 yrs are ready to go to school and excited at the prospect, and so are their parents

We are ever so grateful to the Ronald McDonald House Charities, The National Republic Bank of Chicago, India Development Service of Chicago and all our Valued Individual Donors for their ever constant partnership in this very worthy cause of ours.

Components of the Children's Project:

Our Need:

We need only $3.00 per child per month. 100% of your contribution goes towards the welfare of these children.

In the year 2007:

* 3073 zero to five year old children were examined and treated as needed.

* 536 children were hospitalized for medical and surgical treatments.

* Investigations: X-Rays - 528, Consults - 92, Lab - about 850.

* Surgeries - 122 (1 for Imperforate Anus by Pediatric Surgeon at a Hospital in Surat)

* Treatment for TB - 72 Children.

* Vaccines: 875 MMR vaccines and 946 Hepatitis B vaccines. Other required vaccines are provided by the Government.

* Complete Health Check up including Immunization, Blood tests for Hemoglobin, Blood groups and Sickle Cell Disease Survey were conducted on 7076 students of 8th, 9th & 10th grade in 20 schools. This was made possible through the generosity of Larsen & Toubro Charitable Trust of India.

* Under the leadership of Dr. Ratna Magotra, Cardiac Surgeon from Mumbai, to date we have diagnosed and investigated 98 Children for possible Heart Disease. Of these ECHO was done in 92 Children some at Gram Seva Trust Hospital by Dr. Snehal Kulkarni, Pediatric Cardiologist of Wockhardt Hospital in Mumbai and some at Surat Cardiac Institute.

Congenital Heart Disease was detected in 40 and Rheumatic Heart Disease in 19 Children. Of these, 37 were advised surgery & 3 are being followed up for future surgery..

Surgery was facilitated at Cardiac Centers of Surat and Mumbai for 16 children. Ten children have refused any investigations or surgery and one is inoperable. We have lost 8 children to follow up and 7 have expired; 5 of them post operatively..

We have established a Cardiac Welfare Fund also and have received $10,000.00 as seed money for that from one of our well-wishers.
